What is Indian Naturopathy?

Indian naturopathy is a science based on natural principles of healing.  References to health promotion, disease prevention, naturopathy treatment, and the rehabilitative values of different naturopathy practices are found in ancient Indian Vedic texts. 

What are the health and healing principles of Indian naturopathy?

Indian naturopathic medicine bridges Ayurveda and Yoga, which share similar philosophies derived from ancient Vedic texts.  The fundamental principles that govern health and healing are the internal and external influences of the five great elements of the cosmos: space, air, fire, water, and earth.  The human body is a microcosm to the macrocosm of the universe, thus both gross and subtle energies play a vital role in maintaining the equilibrium of the body.

How do practitioners of Indian Naturopathy perform their assessments?

The assessment method is similar to that of Ayurvedic medicine.  Three primary assessment tools are used:

  1. Questioning
  2. Observation
  3. Palpation (examining by touch)

The Indian naturopathic practitioner looks for elemental imbalances that cause disease.  Questioning facilitates an overall understanding of habits, diet, and areas of comfort and discomfort.  Some observation tools are based on yoga postures and breathing exercises, body gestures (mudra), facial expressions, and vitality.  Palpations are conducted on trigger points (marma) and the abdomen.

What are treatment modalities in Indian naturopathy?

Treatment plans for chronic conditions are primarily geared towards establishing healthy habits and a clear mind.  This is done via lifestyle changes and incorporating or introducing elements that are depleted.  For example, water baths may be recommended if an assessment finds the water element depleted.  Customized and precise yoga postures are also recommended, as well as meditation tools for mind-body-spirit connectivity.

Therapeutic approaches, such as nutrition, spiritual counseling, herbal remedies, and other body or rehabilitative therapies, are recommended and can combine aromatherapy, colour therapy, crystal therapy, hydrotherapy, sun / light therapy, and chakra healing.

Does Indian naturopathy benefit specific conditions?

It is most effective in lifestyle disorders and psychosomatic diseases, such as hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances, temperamental changes / mental health, and aches and pains.

What is the difference between naturopathy practiced in North America vs Indian naturopathy?

Both approaches are considered evidence-based medicines that treat the whole body with drugless therapies, specifically nutrition, lifestyle, and rehabilitation therapies.  However, Indian naturopathic medicine has strong roots in the Vedic sciences of Ayurveda and Yoga.
